dvd::rip

so I gave up on the Window's AutoGK thing and I am going to try out dvd::rip
I followed this guide http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_DVD-Ripping , http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_DVD-Rip

I'll let you know how it goes after tonight when I try and rip and compress a few videos

Well dvd::rip is nice it copies vobs and turns them into avis but here are my compaints... or maybe my lack of skills

1) The transcoding process took nearly 12 hours... I did set it how the tutorial told me though and how it wanted it was to go slow and accurate

2) Well I thought that going slow and accurate would have been a good choice but audio and video were off by a few micro sec. This was not totally a bad thing since with xine I can tune it... BUT I am not always going to use this machine to play videos once I can afford the media center pc that I want. I guess I will have to find out how to make the audio and video sync better maybe I'll try a rip with default settings and give that a go!

Well today I am greeted with a nice new error. I am so glad that linux is finding new ways not to work for me!

Now I need to find out how to make things work again... I get this error with man other kde emerges.

Well I got it up and running in about 10min of googling
" kde-env is not required (and is in fact incompatible) with the new kdelibs. Do "emerge -C kde-env" to remove kde-env and resolve these" - http://www.mail-archive.com/gentoo-amd64@lists.gentoo.org/msg06446.html

and also in the gentoo handbook it said to try and remove a conflicting package... but I did not want to mess up my system so I had to have some extra encouragement!

All You Do Is WINE About Windows!!!

So I have a few Windows apps that I need to run. I'll install WINE!
sudo emerge -av wine
Once wine is installed I followed this guide http://www.winehq.com/site/docs/wineusr-guide/index
IF I CAN READ YOU CAN TOO (I'll just list my problems)

Installing AutoGK:
wine "c:\program files\autogk\autogordianknot.2.27.setup.exe"
when I did that it ful screened and I couldn't do anything so I had to kill it
ps ax |grep wine < showed the wine server I killed it
ps ax |grep auto < showed the executable running i kill it and then i had my screen back

it looks like another guy has the same problem

Looks like I will have to update this once I figure it out...

Well I tried cpuz.exe with WINE and that worked... so autoGK must just be the way it was made!
With autoGK I also tried to "Press Enter" and some "ALT + [Letter]" combinations but nothing worked for me!

Wireless Atheros Startup Script

Since I have Gentoo I need to make a script to startup wireless... I dont want it to start all the time though so I wont let it start at boot with "rc-update" I will just "sudo ./madwifi" to get it up and running

Just as a note I built the madwifi-ng by hand I did not use "emerge" if that makes a difference I am not sure.

To fix this problem where the vga-out is the default screen I will edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and add ***One*** line.

I have a problem when I do this though it makes it nearly impossible for me to have dual-head support. I suppose that my next task is finding out how to make a laptop screen the defualt instead of the vga-out!

P.S. I think this is a common problem with the "Radeon Mobility x700" cards on laptops.

Mplayer ASCII Fun!

Alright, so I want to play videos in ASCII! I need to compile Mplayer with libcaca(color) and aalib(black &white) so I'll add libcaca and aalib to my USE="" since I use gentoo. Now I'll "sudo emerge -av mplayer" and say "Yes". Okay now Mplayer is ready for me to enjoy movies in ASCII!!! Let me tell Mplayer "mplayer -vo caca videos/movies/Pulp.Fiction.avi" WOO HOO it worked in color now let me try black & white "mplayer -vo aa videos/movies/PulpFiction.avi" YES that worked too now let me try it in a terminal (ctrl+alt+F1) "mplayer -vo caca videos/movies/Pulp.Fiction.avi" HUMMM Mplayer is generation some numbers at the same time let me try this "mplayer -quiet -vo caca videos/movies/Pulp.Fiction.avi" Good it works! All I need to try now is if it works over ssh and if it will work on Windows PUTTY (for ssh).

Yes mplayer does work over SSH and PUTTY.

I don't know why but I have a hard time remebering things. Let me use this as a tool to help me remeber the things I am trying to do with linux. Maybe this will be able to help some other? I'm not sure I just know that I need a reference of the things I have done!
